Reflections (Source)

2020

A personal project to create a moving and interactive sculpture. I wanted to convey my personal belief of the power of reflections in our daily life to show us other versions of ourselves.

My prototype - having fun with the scattering of light.

Final version - with added interactive portal element

Modeled in Rhino and 3d printed a portal mount for the distance sensors. Also 3d printed a mount for the servo motor (not pictured).

Created Arduino code to collect input data through ultrasonic ranger distance sensors and send output data to a servo motor in order to control the movement of the sculpture. When left alone, the pyramid and the projected pyramid will remain stationary. However when a hand is placed within the portal, the distance sensor will fall within a defined range which will subsequently trigger the servo motor and pyramid visual to rotate.

Channeled input data from Arduino to Max/MSP to alter real time visual content displayed on projectors based on whether or not someone placed their hand within the portal.
The Serial.println() value will either be one or zero based on the state of the portal. This value is directly sent to Max/MSP.
